Nurturing Terroir
We nurture our terroir and its biodiversity. We aim to respond to the challenges of climate change to ensure access to quality ingredients now & for generations to come.
Certification and Terroir Mapping
Certification of our raw materials ensures that they are grown to the highest environmental standards. We have assessed our three key raw materials – barley, malt and maize – to better understand the environmental risks associated with their cultivation.
We are proud to be members of Bord Bia’s Origin Green programme which recognises excellence in sustainability performance.
Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
Our Sustainable Green Spring Barley scheme is a tailored programme which rewards farmers for delivering environmental benefits on their farms.
We have worked in partnership with growers to develop the scheme which includes measures to limit the use of pesticides, prevent soil erosion, promote biodiversity and support bee populations.
In addition, we are working with farmers to capture data related to the carbon footprint of their farms.
In 2022, 293 farmers participated in the programme.
Biodiversity
Producing whiskey from cereals which rely on balanced ecosystems and sustainable agricultural practices means that we are naturally focused on nurturing, protecting and promoting biodiversity.
Since 2012, we have implemented a long-term biodiversity strategy at our distillery in Midleton and warehousing site at Dungourney.
Working with local experts, our aim is to protect and enhance the ecological health of both sites by introducing native species of trees, plants and flowers.
Over the last decade, we have planted nearly 100,000 trees and 10,000 square metres of wildflowers. Dedicated Biodiversity Zones and woodland corridors now support native flora and fauna.
We are proud partners of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan and National Biodiversity Data Centre.
